Sunny Sehlaha sa Bana in Pimville Zone 3 is a good place for parents as well as children. The principal, Maserame Chuene, is a wonderful counsellor, and parents often come to her for advice. Sehlaha opened in 1981, 30 years after the first ASHA pre-school, and its design is large, open and spacious. Adelah, the first cook, says that menus have improved since she worked at ASHA, with children now getting vegetables and soya mince as well. Parents are impressed with the English skills of their ASHA pre-schoolers, and many go on to a good future in private schools because of their good foundation. Helen Silgee Pre-school in Orlando East started in 1952, in Helen’s own home. Helen was the chairman of a service committee - a community icon, who had a street in Orlando East named after her, as well as the school she founded. Full of energy and initiative, Helen Silgee was deeply committed to young children and community. She joined ASHA to make sure that crèches were built in Orlando East. She founded another four service committees, all working to get crèches started. Today, Helen Silgee Pre-school, recently refurbished with new paving, paint and other improvements, continues to support her vision, providing a good educational foundation for a better future, more than fifty years after Helen started her work with ASHA.

A beautiful entrance would also attract people' s attention to the facility, a garden or beautiful space rising up out of the dust would be symbolic of what we do at POPUP, we help people to rise up out of the dust and become empowered. Beautifying our entrance is also a worthwhile investment in the light of the 2010 world cup.

This stretch of land was also used for a small creche many years ago, but the only thing still remaining is the colourful paint on the walls. POPUP needs hands who can help them to weed the grass and to plant some new seeds/grass so that the image of the building looks much cleaner and nicer.

Teddy Bear Nursery School in Lakeside Orange Farm is a registered NPO. We take care of 170 orphaned and vulnerable children who are very needy. The Geneva crisis centre is situated in Eerste River in the Northern suburbs and was founded by Mrs Geneva Claasen, the head of the centre, in 2001 to render a place of shelter, hope and restoration to abused women and children. The mission of Geneva Crisis Centre is to help people restore their lives and therefore accepts all people, irrespective of race, age, gender or HIV status and helping learners to develop their potential. The centre recently accommodated refugees that were affected by the Xenophobia that swept our country and has also made provision for abused men and elderly people.

The Carl du Toit Centre has taught deaf children for 13 years to speak using no sign language. They wear hearing aids or have a Cochlear Implant to aid them to hear sound and eventually develop language. The children are taught to listen to sounds and recognise them and through varied experiences to build vocabulary and understanding of spoken language. The 34 children attending the full time program fill their days with many learning experiences and enjoy play time just as much as normal children. This way they learn social skills which prepares them eventually for education in normal schools.

William Clark Gardens/ Othandweni Children’s Home situated in Sherwood is registered to provide a service to 72 children. The Home runs 6 cottages catering for schoolgoing children The children have been abandoned abused or neglected and are admitted to the Home through the Children’s Court. They are placed their either by a social worker or the police. The first five cottages were officially opened by Mr Loring Rattray on 28 August 1964. The 31 Club donated a further cottage and later, the hall which was opened on 7th June 1974.

Which ASHA Pre-school has a founder who is a famous TV star? It’s Monde Pre-school in Mofolo South. Mrs Florence Siwedi (now 78 years old) is well-known as the granny of Thandazo in Muvhango, the TV series. She formed the Mofolo South Service Committee that raised funds to start the school. Monde has also been used as a training centre by ASHA, for the Inclusion Programme, to help young children with learning delays. Monde was at one stage quite an empty pre-school, but with the energy and enthusiasm of principal Emma Motaung, numbers have risen sharply and the school is almost full. The Cape Kidney Association is a Non-Profit Association that raises funds for Indigent Kidney patient and their families at Groote Schuur & Tygerberg Hospitals and surrounding areas of the Western Cape. Our main focus area is to provide food, shelter and clothing to the homeless and destitute living on the streets. The Shelter provides a temporary home to 54 clients, 32 males and 22 females. Their age groups range from 18 – 65 years old. Our mission is to reunite our clients with their families and reintegrate them into society by enhancing their social, economic and spiritual skills.

Tiny Vuka Phansi is ASHA’s smallest pre-school, with space for only 60 children. Judith Twala started the school in her own home in dangerous, poor Orlando East. She gave 22 years of her life to Vuka Phansi, a great ASHA woman who served young children for over thirty years. Vuka Phansi pre-school has been refurbished with new paving and paint. After its long and busy life giving children a good foundation for a better future, it deserved to be beautified and repaired. It also gives support to its many grannies, with annual events and celebrations. The parents and principal Sibongile Dube are involved in community patrols and community police forums with Orlando Police Station. Through the school, ASHA provided funding to furnish the children’s trauma counselling unit at Orlando Police Station. This makes Orlando East safer for children. The pre-school and its staff and parents are dedicated to providing Orlando East children a good foundation for a better future.

Our primary source of income are school fees, which we try to keep as reasonable as possible. We provide breakfast, a cooked lunch as well as a snack.

Working in the hospital neonatal unit means an environment which can support the productivity and well-being of the professional staff, the health and safety of our tiny patients and their families. The Groote Schuur Neonatal staff are at the forefront of specialist care for premature babies in the Western Cape, South Africa. The team cares for over 2,400 sick and premature babies each year (1 in 10 births). It is the first home for these fragile babies, who are either born at the hospital or transferred as emergencies from other centres without such specialist facilities. Due to rapid medical advances and new ways of providing specialist care most babies who survive and are successfully nurtured and most will go home, happy and healthy.

Jolly Jumping Day Centre - Leah takes care of over 40 children from the age of 5 years and younger. She provides them with two healthy meals each day and even though she has virtually no toys for the children, she keeps them entertained and stimulated along with two other carers. I spoke to two of the parents when they came to fetch their children at the end of the day and both of them said that their children have learnt good manners, are well cared for and are happy in Leah's care.

This project will involve spending the day involved in painting work at our leadership centre in Shongweni, which is on a 43 acre smallholding that World Changers owns. Our facility gets a lot of continual use and wear and tear. Therefore, it needs to be painted fairly regularly. The last time most of the facility was painted was about 3 years ago, but one would think it was done 10 years ago, based on the existing wear and tear. There are 6 buildings (about 700sq mtr) in total, most of which need a lot of painting internally and externally, so there is no shortage of work to be done.

Our youngest at the moment is 3 months and our oldest is 19 (he is a 1st year varsity student). Some of our children are HIV/AIDS positive. We also have 11 mentally challenged children.

The Good Night and God Bless waterproof sleeping bag project was started in 2006 and to date in excess of 15,000 have been made by volunteers and distributed to the homeless, refugees and township residents. . The material used is 60 micron recycled plastic bags size 1550 x 900cm, newspaper and packing tape. This unbelievably easy to make bag can be made by anyone from age 14 to 75. Grant of R70,000 from the Rotary Club of Claremont plus a further R15,000 from the public covers the cost of each bag which is R5.50. I will happily demonstrate to anyone at any time, including the 18th September.

The Hanna Jaff Pre-school in Mofolo North is the only ASHA pre-school with a double storey ASHA pre-school building. It has a classroom in the basement, steep slopes and rocky grounds. Children love climbing on the rocks. There is a very active grannies’ club whose members sew beautiful clothes. The Jaff family are actively involved in the pre-school to this day, and the school has won many awards for quality early education. It was the site of a Montessori programme at one stage of its development, though now it is running a conventional early education programme in line with the education curriculum. GCU is a Christian based community organisation, focusing on inspiring and uplifting the youth in Heideveld situated on the Cape Flats. Heideveld has one of the highest crime and drug addiction rates and is well known for gangster activities. These problems have resulted from high unemployment and the depressing environment that surrounds people on a daily basis.

Leliebloem House is an Anglican Children's Home for 84 abandoned and abused children. It is our task to nature them, and to seek to return them to their communities as soon as a stable home environment can be established. All the children are sent to us as wards of court. They are therefore the responsibility of the State. A per capita subsidy is received which covers approximately 60% of the cost of looking after the children. The home is run on Christian lines, and sees each child as loved by God and hence deserving our love and care. There are six cottages of 14 children each. A house mother looks after each cottage and we try to create a family feeling for the children. We run a Family Reunification Programme that works with the families in the community. Children are returned to their immediate or extended families when suitable condition exist for their reintegration. Between 20 and 30 children are reunited with their families each year.

ASHA’s Thari Ya Bana Pre-school is in Pimville Zone 5. It’s the “blanket to hold young ones safe” and has an unusual and beautiful American design, with a Perspex covered central courtyard, giving lots of light and bright indoor space for young ones to play and learn. Built by Rank Xerox, various funders claimed a stake. Arguments kept the school shut for two years until parents decided to join ASHA. ASHA’s Judith Twala, who founded Vuka Phansi Pre-school, took over the running of the pre-school which was a great challenge, because the parents were professional and very demanding. Judith Twala and her team delivered superb early childhood education. She ran the school successfully for ten years before she retired in 1991. The current principal, Dolly Ndlovu, successfully continued providing a good foundation for a better future for Pimville pre-schoolers, and has introduced dance classes in the afternoons for ex-pupils.

The Cart Horse Protection Association aims to protect the working cart horses from abuse and contribute to the upliftment of the carting community living on the Cape Flats. We provide clinic, patrol and call out response, veterinary and rehabilitation services to the working cart horses living on the Cape Flats and support, education and training to cart horse owners and drivers who use the working cart horses to collect scrap metal as a means of generating an income for themselves and their families. It is estimated that these working cart horses support over 6000 people living on the Cape Flats.

We also have a Childrens Church where we run programmes for the kids. The men of our church has a Social Responsibility Programme where they go out and repair and upgrade homes in the community. The Project was started in 1994 as one of the Youth Development centres that were established by Girls and Boystown South Africa. Girls and Boystown South Africa was started IN 1958. The Project is registered as a Children’s Home. We work with youth between 12 and 16 years of age who present difficult or challenging behaviour. These youth are referred to us via the Social Work agencies. The project not only provides residential services but also therapeutic, educational, recreational and spiritual development for the youth. Youth are taught social skills for appropriate functioning in the society and are given an opportunity to be successful in their endeavors. The youth attend school in the community and also religious services as well as recreational services. There is currently 45 young persons in the residential facility and 15 that are awaiting admission due to the school placements. The project has 6 cottages that accommodates these young persons and they need to be made child friendly due to the varying ages of the youth i the project.

Volunteer Venture Sa was established in 2002, since VVSA is all for inclusion, Little Angels Sanctuary was formed by a group of volunteers who are not only passionate about caring for children with disabilities, but very experienced in caring for such children. In May 2009 the plight of the people and animals in Garies and surrounding settlements was brought to our attention by a committee member of Western Province Cat Club. Apart from the enormous feral cat problem at a business premises, the animals in the surrounding communities were also suffering. There are no Veterinary services or Animal Welfare Organisations in the area, with the result that the animals breed indiscriminately. There is also very little shelter for the animals and while the owners do their best to care for their pets, they desperately need help.

In upmarket Dube you’ll find ASHA’s Winifred Keneiloe Pre-school. It’s named after the founder, Winifred Keneiloe –Kgoroeadira herself. She ran a soup kitchen in Western Native Township until her family was again uprooted and moved to Dube South. It wasn’t long before Winifred was running a huge day nursery from her own home and garage for the cream of Soweto. This was the show-pre-school in Soweto’s early days, and bus tours often came past to see it. Today it’s a beautiful school with lovely gardens and outdoor equipment. Parents like the supportive environment and individual attention for each child provided by principal Sophie Sebolai and her team of teachers and housekeeping staff. At Winifred, all the children are getting a good foundation for a better future.

Edith Benson Babies Home is registered for 60 infants and young children under 5 years of age. All the babies have been abandoned abused or neglected and are admitted to the Home through the Children's Court. They are placed thier either by a social worker or the police. A large number of the babies and children are HIV positive and some are born with full-blown AIDS. Others have kwashiorkor, rickets and Tuberculosis.

Currently it is being run by a very loving day mother who loves these kids unconditionally. It would benefit the kids so much to have access to educational puzzles and story books. I would like this association to aid this wonderful day mother with the necessary educational tools that she needs to take this daycare centre to a different level.
